[FOOD] 20141217 Gai Kei Street Food 佳记小吃 @ Mong Kok

If you are around Mong Kok and looking for some street food, probably you will notice this little corner store known as Gai Kei (佳记小吃) where you will see many locals will queue to buy something as snack.

TO GO

The store is located at the junction between Sai Yeung Choi Street (Ladies Street) and Dundas Street. You can either come from Yau Ma Tei MTR station exit A2 or from Mong Kok MTR station exit E2 using Tsuen Wan Line (Red) or Kwun Tong Line (Green). Both within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance depends on the human traffic.

SPECIALITY

Just happened to bump into this stall when I was researching about street food at Mong Kok. To be honest, the food that they served didn't really appeal me. Most of it are packet/processed food like sausages and fish balls. I didn't even know they are selling fermented taufu (smelly taufu) as usually you will be able to sniff it out from miles away. They looked more like plain fried tofu instead.

Being sceptical, I decided to give the grilled squid a try since most of the locals are queueing for that.

The tentacles are used for the grill and brushed with their BBQ sweet sauce when it is almost ready. Each stick costs HKD15 (RM7) which is overpriced in my opinion but typical pricing in Hong Kong.

There are also other street food around Gai Kei. The Taiwanese Hao Da Da chicken chop is just next door and the Lei Keong Kei crispy egg crepe is just nearby.

SUMMARY

To be honest, the grill squid is just mediocre. No skills nor effort was noticed when preparing the squid, which translated into the blunt taste. Not recommended.
